Our summer days are dwindling—at least according to local school calendars—which makes this a perfect time for a staycation day at our very own Bacara Resort & Spa.

I recently enjoyed the heavenly Signature Barbor SeaCreation Facial, an amazing treatment that “unites the elements—Ocean, Sun, Earth and Atmosphere—to refine pores and heal sun-damaged skin.” It was lovely. According to the literature, “utilizing precious extracts of exclusive microorganisms found in the depths of the sea, this treatment is designed for those who want to see a dramatic improvement in their skin while indulging in a strategically choreographed stress relieving massage.”

I don’t know if it was the repairing antioxidants, vitamin c, hyaluronic acid and organic seaweed extracts; the healing fingers of my lovely therapist; or just the rare treat of a quiet Sunday of complete rest, relaxation and pampering, but my skin has never looked better. Plus, a portion of the proceeds from this treatment benefits the Gaviota Coast Conservancy.

The Bacara recently revamped its entire spa and wellness program to include an oceanview rooftop terrace for open-air massages, a self-applied marine Mud Bar, and two private lounge areas for European sunbathing and relaxation. In addition, there are a variety of new European and locally-inspired spa treatments including the signature BABOR SeaCreation Facial that I had.

The Spa Café is also delicious. We tried the edamame dumplings, which were fabulous (and healthy!), as was the soba noodle soup made with rock shrimp, asparagus, snow peas and enoki mushrooms. They also have a full menu of customizable smoothies, as well as a nice selection of breakfast and lunch items.

We’ve got a long, Labor Day weekend ahead of us, which is certainly more than enough to make me smile. Here are a few more happy dance-worthy things on my list right now:

1. Taste of the Town

The 33rd annual Santa Barbara Taste of the Town, a wine and culinary event benefiting the Arthritis Foundation on Sunday, Sept. 7 is sure to be a wonderful afternoon of wine tasting and delicious nibbles presented from many of Santa Barbara’s finest restaurants and wineries. For more information and to purchase tickets call Arthritis Foundation at 805/563-4685 visit TasteofTheTownSantaBarbara.org.

2. Labor Day Sunday block party at El Paseo

This Sunday (Aug. 31) from noon to 3 p.m., you can enjoy the once a year Wine Collection of El Paseo Labor Day Weekend Block Party. A $30 fee gets you tastings from Margerum Wine Company, Grassini, Au Bon Climat, Happy Canyon Vineyard and Jamie Slone Wines, as well as a commemorative glass and taco lunch.  813 Anacapa St., Santa Barbara in El Paseo.

3. Oysters and Bubbly

Oysters and sparkling wine make beautiful music together, especially this time of year. We like to pair local oysters from Santa Barbara Fish Market with a sparkling Italian wine like Berlucchi Franciacorta Brut.

4. Barbecue Time

Long weekends are the perfect time to fire up the coals (or gas up the grills). Luckily, I’ve already compiled a wealth of winning wine options to pair with your favorite foods.

5. A Real Happy Dance

Brad Williams has appeared on numerous TV shows including Legit, Live at Gotham, The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Mind Of Mencia, and Pitboss. Williams has also performed for the troops all over the world. Williams’s show is high energy. Robin Williams called him “Prozac with a head.” Williams’s ability to make humorous observations on disability, relationships, sex, and race are winning over audiences and proving that anyone can overcome their shortcomings.

Get out those Hawaiian shirts and leis, Finch & Fork is hosting a special “Farewell to Tiki Tuesday Luau” on Tuesday, August 26, beginning at 5 p.m.  The festivities, which run till dark, will include live entertainment. Chef James Siao will be roasting a whole pig and serving an island inspired buffet, and of course, there will be tiki cocktails galore.

Hula inducing libations include a Daiquiri bar (frozen or shaken, whatever you prefer), Mai Tais and a myriad of rum punches.

THE LARK UNVEILS NEW ART INSTALLATION BY ARTIST KEVIN EDDY

The Lark has unveiled a new installation by Kevin Eddy, a local fine art photographer specializing in landscapes and architecture using color for a personalized expression of his subject.

Raised in Tucson, Eddy discovered his father’s camera at the age of four, beginning his exploration in the art of photography. His education eventually brought him to the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. His new work showcased at The Lark is created with a Nikon Digital SLR and includes over a dozen stunning images.

Eddy recently won a national award from The Stone Crop Gallery in Maine. The gallery’s 3rd annual exhibition featured cell phone photography and recognized Eddy for his broad range of color and versatility in landscapes.

The installation is featured along the front hallway of The Lark. Other public art includes the outdoor murals at Lucky Penny and five rotating murals on the front building’s doors on Yanonali Street by other local artists.

Film of 1964 Rock ‘n Roll “T.A.M.I. SHOW” Benefit for Plaza Playhouse Theater in Carpinteria

Classic rock lovers, are you ready to rock out like it’s 1964? Then, make plans to be at the Plaza Playhouse in Carpinteria for a rare public screening of one of the greatest rock and roll shows you’ve never seen from 1964.  The T.A.M.I. Show features performances from James Brown, Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, The Supremes and The Beach Boys to name a few.

TAMIshowPOSTERPlaying one night only Saturday, August 23 at 7:15 p.m., this one-time only presentation of the “T.A.M.I. Show” will serve as a fundraiser for the non-profit theater, which is on track to purchase a new, much wider screen for the venue.  It will be 20’x12’ and allow for the showing of many of the great wide screen classics of the past 60 years as well as contemporary films.

Steve Binder, the producer/director, will be on hand to introduce the film and will stay for a Q&A after the film.  (Running time 100 minutes). He will have copies of his book for sale as well.

Tickets are $20 each and available for purchase at plazatheatercarpinteria.com. Doors open at 6:30pm and tickets (if available) can be purchased at the box office the night of the show. Located at 4916 Carpinteria Ave. the theatre is wheelchair accessible.

To The Sea, an unnatural journey opens at the Art From Scrap Gallery at 302 E. Cota St. on Friday. August 22, from 6–8 p.m. Curated by artist Holly Mackay, To The Sea is an all age collaborative installation and playful call to action aiming to empower and engage the community in finding solutions to the growing problem of plastics in our environment, specifically in our water.

“We all make choices that effect our environment and each other. By involving community directly and physically in the intimate details of this problem, my hope is to make this global issue personal and less intimidating, I want people to feel that their actions matter, and that huge triumphs are made of small steps,” says Mackay. “My impulse is to go beyond the fear and repulsion that permeate a problem like this and re-signify the process of cleaning up our environment as positive as opposed to an almighty burden. I think you’ll engage a greater swath of the general public if you present the matter with humor, beauty and kindness instead of lobbing at them yet another barrage of mind numbing statistics of the damage we are doing to ourselves.”

There are three main parts to the installation; a grid of carefully selected trash found on local beaches, a series of collaborative “Instructional Diagram” paintings depicting aspects of the “pollution process” and children’s reaction to it, and a Tidal Zone Diorama which will include a number of creatures made by community members from our very own beach trash.

To The Sea, an unnatural journey will be on view through October 4.

We’re big fans of Coveted Cakery‘s baked goods, so we were very excited to hear about owner Jessica Burton‘s recent collaboration with local artisans on a new specialty cupcake menu.

The initial launch of this collaboration includes pairings with Sweet Lady Cook, a purveyor of seasonal small batch jams made from locally sourced organic fruits; Rock Rose Provisions, which makes small batch handcrafted nut butters using responsibly sourced local ingredients; and Mizuba Tea Company, a Santa Barbara-based tea company sourcing the finest quality Japanese green tea.

To start the project off, Burton turned to some local food artisans that she already knew, was friends with, and had worked with at events. “I pitched the idea to them and they were all on board! I decided to start with three flavors to launch the concept and am planning to add artisans/flavors as we make more connections with the community.”
