Style File: Staycation Day at the Bacara Spa

Our summer days are dwindling—at least according to local school calendars—which makes this a perfect time for a staycation day at our very own Bacara Resort & Spa.

I recently enjoyed the heavenly Signature Barbor SeaCreation Facial, an amazing treatment that “unites the elements—Ocean, Sun, Earth and Atmosphere—to refine pores and heal sun-damaged skin.” It was lovely. According to the literature, “utilizing precious extracts of exclusive microorganisms found in the depths of the sea, this treatment is designed for those who want to see a dramatic improvement in their skin while indulging in a strategically choreographed stress relieving massage.”

I don’t know if it was the repairing antioxidants, vitamin c, hyaluronic acid and organic seaweed extracts; the healing fingers of my lovely therapist; or just the rare treat of a quiet Sunday of complete rest, relaxation and pampering, but my skin has never looked better. Plus, a portion of the proceeds from this treatment benefits the Gaviota Coast Conservancy.

The Bacara recently revamped its entire spa and wellness program to include an oceanview rooftop terrace for open-air massages, a self-applied marine Mud Bar, and two private lounge areas for European sunbathing and relaxation. In addition, there are a variety of new European and locally-inspired spa treatments including the signature BABOR SeaCreation Facial that I had.

Other popular services include the Organic Bliss facial (“50/80 mins Committed to planting a tree for every product sold, this facial by Eminence Organic is ideal for those deeply committed to the health of our planet. Only the freshest, most natural antioxidants, vitamins and enzyme-rich ingredients are combined to nourish and restore the skin to a new level of beauty and health.”), the Citrus Avocado Polish (“50 mins This invigorating exfoliation uses mineral salt blended with oils of avocado, orange, lemon and tangerine rind and is followed by a warm Swiss shower. Includes a shea butter lotion application.”) and the ExFoleyation (“50 mins Out of the Foley wine tasting room and into the spa, this gentle exfoliation with grape seed extracts is followed by a mineral and antioxidant rich grape seed body butter wrap designed to quench and hydrate the skin to a new level of suppleness.”).

The Spa Café is also delicious. We tried the edamame dumplings, which were fabulous (and healthy!), as was the soba noodle soup made with rock shrimp, asparagus, snow peas and enoki mushrooms. They also have a full menu of customizable smoothies, as well as a nice selection of breakfast and lunch items.

When sweet lady Jessica Burton of Coveted Cakery contacted us and asked if we wanted to sample her fall flavors, we knew we were in for a treat! Awesome autumn flavors include Pumpkin Spice, Salted Carmel and Pistachio Honey, as well as the always-delicious Double Chocolate, Snickerdoodle and (my personal favorite) Chocolate Chip cupcakes with a Chocolate Chip cookie on top!

Whether you want something sweet for a small family gathering, an enormous wedding, or anything in between, Burton will bake up cupcakes to order, made fresh and customized just for you. She also makes beautiful customized cookies, like the ones with the fall issue of Santa Barbara SEASONS. As if we weren’t already putty in the hands of this delicious baking company, aren’t these cookies adorable?

You too can taste these yummy cupcakes this weekend at Taste of the Central Coast on Sunday (Oct. 27), hosted by the Family Care Network at the beautiful Bacara Resort & Spa (8301 Hollister Ave.).

Party With Foley Food and Wine Society and Support Scholarships

Foley Food and Wine Society Experience (Bacara)

Foley Food and Wine Society Experience (Bacara)

We were so excited when the Bacara’s tasting room opened that we wrote a Cocktail Corner column about it and made it an editor’s pick in the fall issue of Santa Barbara SEASONS. Well guess what? Now they’re having an “official” launch party featuring a select portfolio of Foley Family Wines and, as if that weren’t enough to entice us, proceeds from the event will go to the nonprofit Santa Barbara Culinary Arts group and their endowment in the name of Julia Child for scholarships at the School of Culinary Arts at SBCC.

Wines available include renowned wineries such as Kuleto Estate, Chalk Hill Estate, Sebastiani, Lancaster Estate and Santa Ynez Valley’s Firestone Vineyard, Foley Estates Vineyard & Winery and Eos Estate Winery. The all-inclusive event features a keepsake wine glass for wine tasting as well as various chef stations with mouth-watering cuisine paired with wines. Partygoers will have access to the gorgeous grounds of the Bacara Resort & Spa as well.

Tickets are pretty affordable (Society Member Price: $40, Non-Member Price: $60) and it all takes place on Saturday, September 28 from 3–6 p.m. at the Bacara Resort & Spa, 8301 Hollister Ave. For more information or to purchase tickets email Danielle Maxwell at  concierge@foleyfoodandwinesociety.com, or visit foleyfoodandwinesociety.com.

A spirited toast to all things alcoholic! By Leslie Dinaberg

The Goodland of Goleta got even better recently with the addition of a new wine tasting room at Bacara Resort & Spa.

Dubbed The Foley Food and Wine Society Experience (Yes, it’s a mouthful, but they’ve also got a LOT of great wines to back it up!), my husband and I were treated to the full Foley experience this week, and I have to say, it was a wonderful way to spend a summer evening.

Thanks to the gracious hospitality and good humor of assistant manager Lila Brown, we were able to taste some delectable wines, as well as learn about several of Foley Family Wines’ properties at the same time.

First up was a Chalk Hill 2010 Sauvignon Blanc, which had a refreshing citrus taste that I really liked. Not only was the wine good, but when Lila gave us a photographic tour of Chalk Hill Estate Vineyards & Winery (on the eastern edge of the Russian River Valley, south of downtown Healdsburg in Sonoma County) including the onsite chef’s culinary garden, stables and Olympic-sized equestrian pavilion, a plan to visit immediately went on my bucket list. What a gorgeous place! Continue reading
