When <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctorwine.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DoctorWine<\/a> himself, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctorwine.it\/eng\/Authors\/Daniele-Cernilli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniele Cernilli<\/a>\u2014a highly acclaimed expert on Italian wines and the author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ultimate-Guide-Italian-Wine-2017\/dp\/8894107507\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1504026388&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=The+Ultimate+Guide+to+Italian+Wine+2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Ultimate Guide to Italian Wine 2017<\/em><\/a>\u2014came to town last week, I was thrilled to be able to break bread with him and taste wines from some of his favorite producers.<\/p>\n<p>Our tasting at <a href=\"http:\/\/lesmarchandswine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Les Marchands Wine Bar &amp; Merchant<\/a> was definitely a treat.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9749\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9749\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9749\" src=\"https:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_7272-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_7272-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_7272-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_7272-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_7272.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9749\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Ultimate Guide to Italian Wine 2017 California Tour, photo by Leslie Dinaberg.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Named one of the \u201c50 Most Influential People in the Wine World\u201d by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.decanter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Decanter Magazine<\/em><\/a>, Cernilli is a journalist by trade, and in addition to being a regular contributor to Italian newspapers, trade and consumer publications, he has written a number of technical books on wine and wine tasting. In addition to multiple editions of <em>The Ultimate Guide to Italian Wine<\/em>, his books include, among others, <em>Memorie di un degustatore di vini<\/em> (<em>Memories of a Wine Taster<\/em>), a chronicle-memoir of his first 25 years as a taster with this opinions on many Italian and foreign wines, and <em>Vitigni del Mondo<\/em> (<em>World Wine Grapes<\/em>), written in collaboration with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctorwine.it\/Autori\/Dario-Cappelloni\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dario Cappelloni<\/a>, which is the most complete catalog of wine grapes ever published in Italy.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, he knows his stuff, and so did the eight wine producers who accompanied him on a tour of California.<\/p>\n<p>First up was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.torrerosazza.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Torre Rosazza<\/a> &#8211; Pinot Grigio Colli Orientali del Fruili DOC 2016. Torre Rosazza is one of the largest producers in Europe, and Pinot Grigio has been cultivated in Friuli for centuries with great results that showcase the area\u2019s hilly terrain.\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Luisa Bortolotto, the winery&#8217;s Export Manager was on hand to answer questions.\u00a0<\/span>Paired with a delicious salad of gems lettuces, heirloom tomato, cucumber, mint and \u00a0mouth-watering herb <em>creme fraiche<\/em>, this wine was fresh and very drinkable.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9750\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9750\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9750\" src=\"https:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_7262-e1564013259915.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_7262-e1564013259915.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_7262-e1564013259915-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9750\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DoctorWine Daniele Cernilli leads The Ultimate Guide to Italian Wine 2017 California Tour luncheon at Les Marchands, photo by Leslie Dinaberg.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Next up were two wines paired with a delicious summer corn chowder: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.querciabella.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Querciabella<\/a> &#8211; Chianti Classico DOCG 2013 from Tuscany, along with Owner\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Giacomo Neri; and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.feudomaccari.it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Feudo Maccari<\/a> &#8211; Saia Nero d&#8217;Avola Sicilia DOC 2014 from Sicily.<\/p>\n<p>Querciabella, as DoctorWine explained, has been organic since 1988, long before there were any regulations around the practice and this very classic, 100% Sangiovese Chianti was quite lovely with a balance of fruity and savory notes. The\u00a0Feudo Maccari wine, made from 100% <a href=\"http:\/\/winefolly.com\/review\/guide-to-nero-davola-wine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nero d&#8217;Avola grapes<\/a> was very complex and full bodied, but quite well balanced, and also paired very well with the soup.<\/p>\n<p>Our main course was the Les Marchands fabulous take on <em>Steak Frites<\/em>, with pan seared hangar steak, wild argula, salsa verde and French fries. It paired really well with three different wines:\u00a0<span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.carlettipoliziano.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Poliziano<\/a> Asinone Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2012 from Tuscany\/Montepulciano, accompanied by Owner Francesco Carletti (&#8220;King of the old Tuscan wines is the Nobile,&#8221; says DoctorWine, and it did indeed have some royal flavor);\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.piocesare.it\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pio Cesare <\/a>Barolo DOCG 2013 from Piedmont, a lovely 100% Nebbiolo classic Barolo; and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.velenosivini.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Velenosi<\/a> Roggio Del Filare Rosso Piceno Superiore DOCG 2012 from Marche.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Finally a lovely assortment of cheese and <a href=\"http:\/\/sbseasons.com\/2016\/08\/the-carbs-have-landed-helena-avenue-bakery-opens-in-the-funk-zone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Helena Ave Bakery<\/a> breads accompanied the last two wines: the Robert Parker 100-point-rated\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.casanovadineri.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Casanova di Neri<\/a> &#8211; Tenuta Nuova Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012 from Tuscany\/Montalcino, along with General Manager Roberto La Sorte (yes, it was excellent); and the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bertani.net\/en\/wines\/amarone-classico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bertani<\/a> &#8211; Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOC 2007 from Veneto\/Amarone, accompanied by Technical Director Girdano Formenti. DoctorWine explained that the Bertani was a classic Amarone, made the traditional way, in vineyards devoted entirely to producing drying grapes. The grapes are set aside to dry on (racks made from bamboo canes and then they ferment in concrete and age in barrels for seven years.
