By <a href=\"http:\/\/sbseasons.com\/2017\/01\/cocktail-corner-not-vodka-water\/\" target=\"_blank\">Leslie Dinaberg\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Wines of a Place&#8221; was the theme for a recent media event\u00a0put on by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waltwines.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Walt Wines<\/a>, and this place was certainly a beauty!<\/p>\n<p>We started the day boarding a shuttle at the <a href=\"http:\/\/meritagecollection.com\/bacararesort\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bacara Resort &amp; Spa<\/a>, which was all abuzz with <a href=\"http:\/\/sbseasons.com\/2016\/12\/cocktail-corner-world-of-pinot-noir-makes-a-delicious-gift\/\" target=\"_blank\">World of Pinot Noir <\/a>festivities coming up that weekend.\u00a0Thanks to our recent rains, the hills were abundantly lush and green as we made our way north on the freeway to the renowned <a href=\"http:\/\/clospepe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Clos Pepe Estate Vineyard<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.staritahills.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sta. Rita Hills AVA<\/a> in Lompoc.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_82405\" style=\"width: 454px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82405\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-82405 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/sbseasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/image001.jpg\" alt=\"Megan Gunderson Paredes and Steve Leveque lead a tasting of Walt Wines &quot;Clos Pepe&quot; Pinot Noir, photos courtesy Walt Wines.\" width=\"444\" height=\"441\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-82405\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Megan Gunderson Paredes and Steve Leveque lead a tasting of Walt Wines &#8220;Clos Pepe&#8221; Pinot Noir, photos courtesy Walt Wines.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Founder <a href=\"http:\/\/clospepe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pepe<\/a> (who retired in 2015, giving Walt Wines a long-term lease on the vineyard) led us on a walking tour of the vineyard, which is acclaimed\u00a0for producing excellent wines under the Clos Pepe label, as well providing grapes, from 1998-2014, to pinot noir and chardonnay producers such as Walt (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hallwines.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hall Wines<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.siduri.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Siduri\/Novy Wines<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/apvin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">AP Vin<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liquidfarm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Liquid Farm<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/explorelompoc.com\/directory\/arcadian-winery\" target=\"_blank\">Arcadian<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aubonclimat.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Au Bon Climat<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/store.hitchingpostwines.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hitching Post<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ojaivineyard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ojai Vineyard<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kenbrownwines.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Brown Wines<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longoriawine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Longoria Wines<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/babcockwinery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Babcock Winery<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loringwinecompany.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Loring Wine Company<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flyinggoatcellars.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flying Goat Cellars<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/smallandtallwines.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Small + Tall<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/conariumwines\/\" target=\"_blank\">Conarium <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/wanfioreproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wan Fiore Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Great wine is about place,&#8221; said Pepe, as a lead in to our vertical tasting of Walt &#8220;Clos Pepe&#8221; Pinot Noir vintages 2013, 2014 and 2015. All were delicious\u2014and unique\u2014and as we sipped Walt winemaker <a href=\"https:\/\/webpages.scu.edu\/womenwinemakers\/view.php?id=372\" target=\"_blank\">Megan Gunderson Paredes<\/a> walked us through<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_82406\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82406\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-82406\" src=\"http:\/\/sbseasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/WALT-Clos-Pepe-Beauty-Bottle-Shot-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"WALT Clos Pepe Pinot Noir, courtesy photo.\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-82406\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">WALT Clos Pepe Pinot Noir, courtesy photo.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>the process that went into creating these three wines. They use optical sorter\u00a0technology\u00a0to hand-sort the fruit, with the ability to make adjustments throughout the process, as she explained. For example, in 2013 harvest took place in October and in 2015 they lost 30-40% of the crop to frost and started harvest much earlier, in late August.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2014is part of the Hall Wines family in Napa Valley, owned by Vintners <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/homeandgarden\/article\/At-home-with-Kathryn-Hall-The-former-ambassador-2593091.php\" target=\"_blank\">Kathryn Walt Hall<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmagazine.com\/publications\/d-ceo\/2013\/november\/craig-hall-the-reluctant-entrepreneur\/\" target=\"_blank\">Craig Hall<\/a>\u2014has a unique approach to crafting Pinot Noir.\u00a0Essentially, as Vice President of Winemaking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waltwines.com\/steve-leveque\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Leveque<\/a> explained, Walt sources its fruit from premier vineyards along the Pacific Coast representing 1,000 miles of Pinot. Rita Hills AVA Walt also sources grapes from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlasvm.com\/vineyards\/?id=78\" target=\"_blank\">Rita&#8217;s Crown<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlasvm.com\/vineyards\/?id=48\" target=\"_blank\">Radian<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlasvm.com\/vineyards\/?id=48\" target=\"_blank\">Bentrock<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.princeofpinot.com\/article\/523\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fiddlestix<\/a>. \u00a0They also create estate and single vineyard wines\u00a0from Santa Lucia Highlands, Anderson Valley, Los Carneros (Napa County), Sonoma Coast and Willamette Valley\u2014hence, the 1,000 miles\u00a0of Pinot.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_82407\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82407\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-82407\" src=\"http:\/\/sbseasons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Clos-Pepe-2.jpg\" alt=\"Clos Pepe Vineyard, courtesy Walt Wine.\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-82407\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clos Pepe Vineyard, courtesy Walt Wine.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After the tasting we made our way to <a href=\"http:\/\/sykitchen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">S.Y.
