Courtesy of Lotusland and Individual Artists.<\/p><\/div><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<h2>\n\tPut a Bird on It!<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<h3>\n\tThis spring, the otherworldly dreaminess of<a href=\"http:\/\/lotusland.org\"> Lotusland<\/a> transforms into a real-world call for awareness as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lotusland.org\/explore-garden\/flock-birds-on-the-brink\/\"><em>FLOCK: Birds on the Brink<\/em> <\/a>comes to the garden.&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<h4>\n\tStory by <a href=\"http:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\">Leslie Dinaberg<\/a><br \/>\n<\/h4>\n<p>\n\tInspired by&nbsp;the&nbsp;interdependency of bird species to plant species, and to the human race, this&nbsp;contemporary art exhibit celebrates the daily presence of birds in our gardens and communities while illustrating the critical impact of wild bird populations on our ecosystems and our own well-being.&nbsp;Guest curator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nancygifford.com\/\">Nancy Gifford<\/a> (the same talented dynamo who brought the buzz-worthy bee-themed <em>SWARM <\/em>to the venue in 2013 and <em>GONE <\/em>in 2012) and the Lotusland team gathered artworks and commissioned installations from more than&nbsp;30 local and international artists, which are displayed in the pavilion and&mdash;for the first time&mdash;throughout the garden.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&ldquo;It should be quite a provocative and visceral experience,&rdquo; says Gifford, who hopes to inspire action from all those who encounter <em>FLOCK<\/em>. &ldquo;This year, we are covering the issues about birds&hellip;it&rsquo;s about the interrelatedness of species and how important birds are.&rdquo;&nbsp;She continues, &ldquo;Plus there&rsquo;s a tremendous amount of great artists worldwide who work with birds and the bird theme. Approaching the Pavilion Gallery, visitors duck beneath a courtyard &ldquo;ceiling&rdquo; of empty black cages titled<em> Silent Spring<\/em>, their doors open in wait for the return of songbirds long extinct. Upon entering, one quickly encounters the foreboding <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidhochbaum.com\">David Hochbaum<\/a> blackbird <em>Murmuration<\/em> installation hovering over <a href=\"http:\/\/lauriehogin.com\/\">Laurie Hogin<\/a>&rsquo;s splashy Darwinian landscapes, Robyn Geddes&rsquo;s moody color field birds, <em>a burning crow <\/em>by local artist <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Keith_Puccinelli\">Keith Puccinelli <\/a>and embellished taxidermy specimens from New Zealand artist <a href=\"http:\/\/karleyfeaver.com\">Karley Feaver<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThen there are various mechanical devices by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flowersgallery.com\/artists\/jane-edden\/\">Jane Edden<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/juanfontanive.com\">Juan Fontanive<\/a> and Norman Reed, as well as a &ldquo;chick bar&rdquo; diorama by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaellongartist.com\/aritst-statement\/\">Michael Long<\/a>. Next is the &ldquo;nest&rdquo; room full of surprises by <a href=\"http:\/\/esthertraugot.com\/\">Esther Traugot<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sgaylestevens.com\/Text_page.cfm?pID=4961\">Gayle Stevens<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philipkoplin.com\/\">Philip Koplin<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/izamyers.com\/\">Liza Myers<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariarendon.net\/\">Maria Rendon<\/a> and the mesmerizing video <em>Bobe&rsquo;s Legend<\/em> by Macedonian artist <a href=\"http:\/\/gligorov.aeroplastics.net\/\">Robert Gligorov<\/a>.&nbsp;Visitors then go through the pavilion into the main gallery, which features large-scale haunting bird works by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fatemehburnes.com\/\">Fatemeh Burnes<\/a>. Expect to encounter a <em>Murder of Crows <\/em>in the newly restored blue garden, Gary Smith&rsquo;s human-scale nests, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rosannetruxeslivingston.com\/rt-livingston-bio.html\">R.T. Livingston<\/a>&rsquo;s camouflaged<em> Sitting Ducks: Hiding in Plain Sight <\/em>by the lotus pool, a larger-than-life caged topiary peacock by Joe Shelton and a birdbath sound machine by Carlos Padilla and<em> Pod Nest <\/em>by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.luisvelazquezart.com\/\">Luis Velazquez<\/a> in the pavilion courtyard. Other participating artists include <a href=\"http:\/\/sharonbeals.com\/\">Sharon Beals<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.penelopegottlieb.com\/PenelopeGottlieb\/Penelope_Gottlieb_Home.html\">Penelope Gottlieb,<\/a> James Hodgson, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nathanhuff.com\/\">Nathan Huff<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/pamelalarsson.artspan.com\/\">Pamela Larsson-Toscher<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/anneluther.com\/\">Anne Luther<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kaorumansour.com\/\">Kaoru Mansour<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cherylmedow.com\/artist\/\">Cheryl Medow<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tommielko.com\/\">Tom Mielko <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.susantibbles.com\/Fineart.html\">Susan Tibbles<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lotusland.org\/explore-garden\/flock-birds-on-the-brink\/\">FLOCK: Birds on the Brink<\/a> <\/em><\/strong>is on view at Lotusland from Saturday, February 28 through Saturday, May 23.
