The beginning of Solvang’s 5th Annual\u00a0Scarecrow Fest <\/a>coincides with the Santa Barbara Wine Country Celebration of Harvest Weekend<\/a>, then\u00a0there are numerous fall activities planned in the Santa Ynez Valley\/Santa Barbara Wine Country, spread throughout the month.<\/p>\n

Running from Oct. 10-Nov. 10, some of the festival highlights include:<\/p>\n

-The amazing scarecrow contest, <\/strong>where\u00a0<\/strong>Solvang businesses, organizations and, as a new facet to this year\u2019s contest, Solvang residents<\/i>, will participate\u00a0in the contest\u00a0by featuring a scarecrow of their own creation, posted\u00a0at their location.\u00a0You can\u00a0vote via ballot boxes scattered about the city, for scarecrow winners in six \u00a0different categories: \u201cBest Scarecrow in Motion,\u201d \u201cBest Use of Recycled Materials,\u201d \u201cBest Use of a Business Theme,\u201d \u201cMost Danish,\u201d \u201cSpookiest\u201d and \u201cMost Humorous.\u201d Ballots are\u00a0available at the Solvang Visitors Center and at select Solvang businesses, and feature maps to direct voters to each of the contest\u2019s scarecrows.<\/p>\n

Once a \u201cBest Solvang Scarecrow\u201d winner has been chosen, it will be entered into the Santa Ynez Valley-wide competition with the respective winners from Buellton, Los Alamos, Los Olivos and Santa Ynez, to determine the \u201cValley\u2019s Best Scarecrow\u201d bragging rights.<\/p>\n

–The\u00a0October installment of Solvang\u2019s Third Wednesday,<\/strong> to be held on\u00a0October 15, which will\u00a0feature a \u201cFall Frolic Block Party\u201d at\u00a0the town\u2019s \u201cWest End\u201d\u00a0including\u00a0live music,\u00a0free treats, a local business-supporting \u201cCash Mob\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0free admission to the\u00a0Wildling Art Museum<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

–The\u00a0Oct. 15 \u201cFall Frolic,\u201d Lemos-sponsored doggie costume contest and parade<\/strong>\u00a0kicks off\u00a0at 5:45 p.m., with\u00a0prizes\u00a0\u2013 $20 Lemos gift certificates \u2013 being awarded\u00a0for best costumes in three categories:\u00a0\u201cFunniest,\u201d\u00a0\u201cScariest\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cMost Original.\u201d\u00a0To enter the costume contest, human handlers should show up in front of Lemos (1511 Mission Dr.) by 5:45 p.m., with their animal counterparts. Along the \u201cparade\u201d route, a handful of\u00a0Solvang\u2019s\u00a0West End businesses\u00a0will be\u00a0upping the \u201cfree\u201d and \u201cfood\u201d antes\u00a0including\u00a0Wandering Dog Wine Bar<\/a>, (1539-C Mission Dr.) which\u00a0will be\u00a0offering gratis\u00a0Rosemary Spiced Nuts, as well as\u00a0free cider and nibbles\u00a0in front of\u00a0Kandra\u2019s Beads<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1539-A Mission Dr.)<\/span>.<\/p>\n

-The\u00a021st Annual Haunted House and Street Fair,<\/strong> which will thrill visitors with food, fun and spirits, on Oct. 30-31. The Haunted House and Street Fair, to be held at the\u00a0Solvang Festival Theater <\/a>(420 2nd Street), will include a \u201cTrunk or Treat\u201d\u00a0candy-palooza among other tasty and spirited delights.<\/p>\n
