\"MouthandFruit300x450-200x300\"<\/a>Santa Barbara has a new literary publisher,\u00a0Gunpowder Press<\/a>,\u00a0named for its home city\u2019s namesake, Barbara of Nicomedia<\/a>, the patron saint of gunpowder. \u00a0Editor and Publisher David Starkey<\/a> (former Santa Barbara Poet Laureate and current Santa Barbara SEASONS <\/a>contributing editor, poetry)\u00a0says, \u201cOur books, like gunpowder, need just a spark to explode: they are ready to go off at any moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"TarnationThe imprint will launch its first two books of poetry:\u00a0Mouth & Fruit\u00a0<\/i><\/a>by Santa Barbara Poet Laureate Chryss Yost<\/a>, and\u00a0The Tarnation of Faust<\/i><\/a>, by the late David Case<\/a> on Friday, April 4, at 7 p.m. at\u00a0Santa Barbara City College\u2019s F\u00e9 Bland Auditorium<\/a>\u00a0(West Campus of Santa Barbara City College, 800 block of Cliff Dr.).\u00a0 The event will feature a reading by Yost, with Starkey reading from Case\u2019s work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Starkey explains that the press began with the express goal of publishing \u201cthese two superb poets.\u00a0 Chryss has been writing for decades, and her collection showcases the best of that finely crafted, wide-ranging work.\u00a0 David Case, who died unexpectedly in 2011 at the age of 49, was an equally gifted poet.\u00a0\u00a0 Wry, erudite, haunted, he produced a body of work that deserves the broadest possible readership.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we launch Mouth & Fruit <\/i>and The Tarnation of Faust<\/i>, we look forward to future ventures, intent on remaining small but vibrant, fully committed to each book we publish,\u201d says Starkey.<\/p>\n
