Shot over a three-year period in numerous locations around the world, <em>Mission Blue<\/em> traces legendary oceanographer <a title=\"Sylvia Earle\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/explorers\/bios\/sylvia-earle\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sylvia Earle<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0remarkable personal journey, from her earliest memories exploring the Ocean as a young girl, to her days leading a daring undersea mission in the Virgin Islands to her experience as the chief scientist at NOAA and beyond. The film is part oceanic road trip; part biography; part action adventure story. Guiding us through the film is Stevens, whose own lifelong passion for the ocean inspired him to produce the Academy award winning film, <em>The Cove<\/em>. The film also features James Cameron and the late <a title=\"Mike deGruy\" href=\"http:\/\/mikedegruy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mike deGruy<\/a>. Opening night, sponsored by <a title=\"Studio 7\" href=\"http:\/\/s7arc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Studio 7<\/a> and <em>The Santa Barbara Independent<\/em>, will take place at the Arlington Theatre on \u00a0January 30, \u00a0with director Fisher Stevens and Sylvia Earle attending.<\/p>\n<p>On Closing Night, SBIFF presents the critically acclaimed Before Trilogy: <em>Before Sunrise, Before Sunset<\/em> and <em>Before Midnight.<\/em> The first two films will screen back-to-back at the Lobero Theatre in the afternoon. After a short break, Before Midnight will close the fest at the Arlington Theatre and will include an in-depth conversation moderated by IndieWIRE\u2019s Anne Thompson with co-screenwriters Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy and Richard Linklater, who also directed the film.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Kv6JWoVKlGY?rel=0\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>SBIFF has become an important showcase for Academy-Award frontrunners, many of whom have arrived as nominees and gone on to win the Oscar. Presented by UGG\u00ae Australia.<\/p>\n<p>2014 Virtuosos Award, presented to Daniel Br\u00fchl (<em>Rush<\/em>), Ad\u00e8le Exarchopoulos (<em>Blue Is The Warmest Color<\/em>), Oscar Isaac (<em>Inside Llewyn Davis<\/em>), Michael B. Jordan (<em>Fruitvale Station<\/em>), Brie Larson (<em>Short Term 12<\/em>), <a title=\"Jared Leto\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jared_Leto\" target=\"_blank\">Jared Leto<\/a> (<em>Dallas Buyers Club<\/em>) and June Squibb (<em>Nebraska<\/em>), in recognition of the year\u2019s emerging film artists. The evening will be moderated by Dave Karger, Chief Correspondent and host of &#8220;The Frontrunners&#8221; on Fandango on February 4 at the Arlington Theatre. Sponsored by Adobe.<\/p>\n<p>The panel series, presented by Cox Communications, kicks off at 11 a.m. on February 1, with the \u201cMovers &amp; Shakers\u201d panel, bringing together top producers to discuss their craft, moderated by Los Angeles Times film writer, John Horn, and sponsored by Integrated Media Technologies, Inc.\u00a0At 2 p.m., the next panel is composed of some of the most creative women working in film today entitled \u201cCreative Forces: Women in the Biz,\u201d moderated by Madelyn Hammond, President, Madelyn Hammond &amp; Assoc., and Former Chief Marketing Officer for <em>Variety<\/em> and sponsored by Fielding Graduate University Worldwide Network for Gender Empowerment.<\/p>\n<p>The panels continue during the Fest\u2019s second weekend on February 8 at 11 a.m., with the ever-popular \u201cIt Starts With the Script,\u201d screenwriters panel moderated by indieWIRE\u2019s Anne Thompson.\u00a0At 2:00 p.m. is the \u201cDirectors on Directing\u201d panel, sponsored by Brooks Institute.\u00a0At 4 p.m., SBIFF will present a new panel, the VFX Technology Panel, which will feature the latest advancements in Visual Effects, sponsored by Adobe and moderated by Geoff Boucher, journalist and author.<\/p>\n<p>All panels take place at the Lobero Theatre. Panelists will be announced soon.<\/p>\n<p>A new addition this year is a series of educational\u00a0seminars that will be free to the public and will take place in the UGG Pavilion each day throughout the festival at lunchtime. Subjects include: REPRESENTING WOMEN OF COLOR,\u00a0BREAKING INTO THE INDUSTRY,\u00a0COVERING A FILM FESTIVAL,\u00a0ACQUISITIONS, LOCAL FILMMAKERS,\u00a0SCREEN CUISINE\u00a0and\u00a0SOCIAL JUSTICE.\u00a0Check the festival website for updates.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Another new addition to the Festival is <\/span>Super Silent Sunday: \u00a0on Super Bowl Sunday, SBIFF will present\u2013FOR FREE&#8211; two classic silent films at the Arlington Theatre,\u00a0<em>Wings<\/em>, directed by William A. Wellman and starring Clara Bow, and\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"><em>The Thief of Bagdad<\/em>, directed by Raoul Walsh and starring Douglas Fairbanks.\u00a0<\/span>Live accompaniment will be provided by Adam Aceto on the theatre\u2019s <a title=\"Wonder Morton pipe organ\" href=\"http:\/\/www.loewsjersey.org\/loews-jersey-history\/wonder-morton-organ\" target=\"_blank\">Wonder Morton pipe organ<\/a>, which is one of only five in existence.<\/p>\n<p>Another highlight for locals is\u00a0<a title=\"Mike\u2019s Field Trip to the Movies\" href=\"http:\/\/sbiff.org\/education\/field-trip-to-the-movies\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mike\u2019s Field Trip to the Movies<\/a>, the brainchild of renowned nature cinematographer Mike deGruy, whose passion for exploring and sharing those adventures with audiences through filmmaking was the inspiration for this fascinating and thought-provoking program. The goal of the program, which is offered to 4,000 5th and 6th grade students from throughout Santa Barbara County, is to use the art of filmmaking to stimulate creative, confident and culturally aware thinkers and empower students and teachers with a creative approach to education. This year SBIFF will present Disney\u2019s hit animated comedy, <em>Frozen<\/em>, featuring director Jennifer Lee, who will participate in a Q&amp;A following the screenings with the students and talk about the craft of animated filmmaking.
