{"id":5749,"date":"2013-11-02T09:31:09","date_gmt":"2013-11-02T16:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/?p=5749"},"modified":"2020-01-29T17:55:35","modified_gmt":"2020-01-30T01:55:35","slug":"cocktail-corner-the-pickle-room","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/?p=5749","title":{"rendered":"Cocktail Corner: The Pickle Room"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A spirited toast to all things alcoholic! by <a title=\"Leslie Dinaberg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.LeslieDinaberg.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leslie Dinaberg<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Santa Barbara needs a lounge where people can hang out and be off State Street and kick their feet up and be comfortable,&#8221; says Clay Lovejoy, who recently opened the <a title=\"Pickle Room\" href=\"http:\/\/threepickles.com\/pickel-room-dinners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pickle Room<\/a>, 126 E. Canon Perdido St. (805\/965-3445), with the aim of providing that very thing. The spot is a reincarnation of sorts of<a title=\"Jimmy's Oriental Gardens\" href=\"http:\/\/sbthp.org\/jimmys.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Jimmy&#8217;s Oriental Gardens<\/a>, a favorite local watering hole owned and operated by the Chung family in that spot from 1947 until 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Lovejoy&#8217;s Pickle Room is also a family place, brought back to life by Clay and his father Bob Lovejoy, a longtime Jimmy&#8217;s regular. And it&#8217;s right next door to their <a title=\"Three Pickles Deli + Sub\" href=\"http:\/\/threepickles.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Three Pickles Deli + Sub<\/a>, which the pair have had great success with (along with their other Three Pickles Deli + Sub location at 420 S. Fairview Ave. in Goleta).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10117\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=10117\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10117\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10117\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10117\" src=\"https:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/a8bd7218abc478758a20992685d08a90.jpg\" alt=\"The Pickle Room's Reuben Egg Roll (courtesy photo)\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/a8bd7218abc478758a20992685d08a90.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/a8bd7218abc478758a20992685d08a90-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10117\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Pickle Room&#8217;s Reuben Egg Roll (courtesy photo)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;This place was founded on the <a title=\"Mai Tai\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mai_Tai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mai Tai<\/a>,&#8221; says Clay. &#8220;It was Tommy&#8217;s, the original owner&#8217;s, recipe, in fact probably his father&#8217;s recipe before that, because he was pretty young &#8230;\u00a0 our Mai Tai is our most popular drink by far.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, he&#8217;s got an able hand behind the bar to mix that potent concoction of <a title=\"Myer's Platinum Rum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.liquorama.net\/myerss-platinum-white-rum-jamaica-750ml.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Myer&#8217;s Platinum Rum<\/a> with an exotic blend of fruit juices splashed with dark rum and<a title=\" Bacardi 151 Rum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.drinksmixer.com\/desc185.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Bacardi 151 Rum<\/a>. <a title=\"Bartender Willy Gilbert\" href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.com\/news\/2011\/apr\/21\/willy-gilbert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bartender Willy Gilbert<\/a>, a close friend of the Lovejoys who ran the place for 25 years, is back behind the bar to mix those yummy rummy Mai Tai&#8217;s, along with <a title=\"Singapore Sling\" href=\"http:\/\/www.drinksmixer.com\/drink526.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Singapore Slings<\/a>, <a title=\"Moscow Mules\" href=\"http:\/\/www.esquire.com\/drinks\/moscow-mule-drink-recipe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moscow Mules<\/a>, <a title=\"Hornito's Margaritas \" href=\"http:\/\/www.drinksmixer.com\/cat\/2690\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hornito&#8217;s Margaritas <\/a>and more.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hired him as a manager to come in here and help us out because we wanted it to run seamlessly,&#8221; says Clay. &#8220;He&#8217;s a huge part of making this a success. We&#8217;ve been actually very busy for the last month and have had great crowds.\u00a0 So with his help we&#8217;re learning along the way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5750\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Clay-photo-500x400.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5750\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5750\" src=\"https:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Clay-photo-500x400-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"The Pickle Room's Clay Lovejoy (Leslie Dinaberg photo)\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Clay-photo-500x400-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lesliedinaberg.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Clay-photo-500x400.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5750\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Pickle Room&#8217;s Clay Lovejoy (Leslie Dinaberg photo)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The menu, which Clay describes as &#8220;Chinese Deli,&#8221; was created by executive chef Westen Richards (formerly of Restaurant\u00a0<a title=\"Julienne\" href=\"http:\/\/www.restaurantjulienne.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Julienne<\/a> and <a title=\"Wine Cask\" href=\"http:\/\/www.winecask.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wine Cask<\/a> and currently earning kudos for his creative <a title=\"Spare Parts\" href=\"http:\/\/sparepartsbistro.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spare Parts<\/a> pop up restaurant). &#8220;The Reuben Egg Roll is our #1 seller and people just absolutely love it,&#8221; Clay says. &#8220;We were trying to think of something fun &#8230; we use our pastrami, our sauerkraut and Swiss cheese and we roll it in a egg roll and serve it with our Russian dressing, \u00a0same as the other side. So that&#8217;s been quite a hit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And of course, with a name like the Pickle Room, there have to be pickles.<\/p>\n<p>Clay laughs. &#8220;You know what&#8217;s been a really hot thing is\u2014we have to of course tell people about it because they&#8217;re not used to it\u2014but if you do a shot of whiskey and \u00a0you do a pickle back shot &#8230; You take a little shot of pickle juice it and it knocks it out of your palate so fast and after people try it they just start lining them up &#8230; it&#8217;s been very popular.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>New to the menu this week is the Pickletini , &#8220;A little bit of pickle juice with gin or vodka and then a nice little pickle spear.&#8221; Clay smiles, perhaps at the skeptical expression on my face. &#8220;Everybody I tell about it, they&#8217;re like &#8216;that sounds terrible,&#8217; but everybody that tries it is like &#8216;oh that is awesome I don&#8217;t even like pickles but I like that!'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cheers!
