\"Los-Vega.sm_\"<\/a>This week \u00a1Viva el Arte de Santa B\u00e1rbara<\/a>!\u00a0<\/span>welcomes<\/span>\u00a0Los Vega Son Jarocho, fifth generation jarocho musicians from Veracruz, Mexico. Carrying on a longstanding family tradition, Los Vega brings a fresh pespective to this distinctive style, playing jaranas (small guitars), percussion, vocals and zapateado (footwork).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the organizers, “for more than five generations the Vega family has contributed to traditional\u00a0son jarocho<\/i>, taking on the responsibility of keeping a musical expression alive through the generations.\u00a0Son jarocho<\/i>\u00a0is a style of music with origins in music brought from\u00a0Spain\u00a0in the colonial period, melded with indiginous folk music, dynamic Afro-Caribbean beats and wise-cracking wordplay unique to the tropical\u00a0Veracruz\u00a0region on the\u00a0Gulf of Mexico. It is music traditionally played on stringed instruments such as the\u00a0jarana<\/i>, a strummed guitar with eight to ten strings, three of which are double, and the\u00a0requinto<\/i>, a small four-stringed guitar, and is accompanied by intricate dance or\u00a0zapateado<\/i>, often performed on wooden platforms or\u00a0tarimas<\/i>.”<\/p>\n
