Helping Students Begin School\u00a0with the End in Mind<\/strong><\/p>\n

Offering a range of services, from internships to job\u00a0fairs, r\u00e9sum\u00e9 help to interview prep, the Santa Barbara\u00a0City College Career Center<\/a> helps prepare students\u00a0for future success in myriad ways.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you come into college, there are literally hundreds\u00a0of majors that you could choose from and thousands\u00a0of different kinds of jobs, so one of our approaches\u00a0is trying to simplify that for students as much as possible,\u201d\u00a0said SBCC Career Center Director Chris Phillips<\/a>,\u00a0who uses the \u201cGuided Pathways<\/a>\u201d model to clarify\u00a0a career path for students. \u201cWe try to help them\u00a0make good, informed choices about their direction\u00a0at the college.\u201d<\/p>\n

To do so, the center helps students narrow down\u00a0their major and then follows up with work-based\u00a0learning content. \u201cWe bring employers to campus\u00a0and we try to get them internships and have kind of\u00a0a career awareness about what they\u2019re going to do\u00a0after their major,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

With that end in mind, the center offers one-on-one\u00a0academic counseling, workshops, career planning\u00a0classes, and faculty collaborations. Two staff\u00a0members focus on employers and one specializes\u00a0in internships, even helping employers develop an
\ninternship program if they don\u2019t have one. There\u2019s\u00a0also an online job and internship posting system\u00a0exclusively for SBCC students.<\/p>\n

The center works closely with the Office of\u00a0Equity. \u201cWe are really trying to acknowledge the populations\u00a0of our students who might not be getting this\u00a0information,\u201d said Phillips. \u201cWe want to really actively\u00a0reach them and try to bring some more equity to the\u00a0students when it comes to finding jobs and supporting\u00a0all of our students. That\u2019s really at the front and
\ncenter of what we\u2019re doing as a career center and as a\u00a0college.\u201d<\/p>\n
