Having invested in more than 100 startups (\u201cwhich means I\u2019ve looked at well over 1,000 of them\u201d),\u00a0Santa Barbara Angel Alliance<\/a>\u00a0founder John Petote shares these insights on today\u2019s tech trends.<\/p>\n

Watch the Legislation:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cYou\u2019ve got the government coming down on the four or five big leaders in technology. That\u2019s going to slow them down in some form. I\u2019ve seen this cycle a number of times, where three to four horses take off and they just start dominating. Then the government gets involved, and that means there\u2019s a new fertile ground opportunity for startups to really address niches that they can exploit in a three- to seven-year period.\u201d<\/p>\n

5G Is Next:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThe more you increase bandwidth and the cheaper you make it, the more opportunity there is for new technology to exploit it. We\u2019re going to see a lot of startups come up to take advantage of that, and they should. It is going to be a whole new cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Locals to Watch:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cSome of the companies that are starting to mature as startups and getting ready to go to a blast-off phase are\u00a0Apeel Sciences<\/a>,\u00a0Invoca<\/a>, and\u00a0Impact Radius<\/a>. You don\u2019t hear about [Impact Radius] much, but they\u2019re doing really well. Some data companies as well, including\u00a0HG Insights<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Carpe Data<\/a>, are starting to accelerate. They are young enough and nimble enough to keep morphing their product to capitalize on more bandwidth that\u2019s faster and cheaper.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>S.B. on Upswing:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWhen I started investing in 1997, the VCs would laugh at us and say, \u2018It\u2019s just a little beachy tourist town.\u2019 When a billion-dollar company exits like\u00a0Lynda.com<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(purchased by LinkedIn, then by Microsoft),\u00a0Procore<\/a>\u00a0is probably $4 billion now, and Apeel is probably hitting $1 billion, and it goes on and on, then they go, \u2018Wow.\u2019 They\u2019ve got to take that seriously. Over the last 15 years, the Bay Area is really so crazy, and it\u2019s polluted and it\u2019s so crowded, so they\u2019re saying, \u2018We\u2019ve got to get out and come to Santa Barbara.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Success as Fertilizer:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWhen a company exits, these people either get rich or get richer and then they think, \u2018Well, I\u2019ll be bored,\u2019 so they want to have fun again and start another company and bring more talent in. Or they become an investor, if you\u2019re like me, and help coddle these companies and sit on boards and really mentor them.\u201d<\/p>\n
