\"\"<\/a><\/b>Santa Barbara is a world leader in infrared technology,\u00a0with a long history that dates back to the\u00a0scientists at the 1960s-era Hughes Aircraft Co.<\/a>,\u00a0which later became the Santa Barbara Research Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n

With present-day industry bigwig FLIR<\/a> located\u00a0here, along with defense and aerospace industry\u00a0heavyweights like Raytheon<\/a> and Lockheed Martin<\/a> and\u00a0companies such as SE-IR Corporation<\/a>, Electro Optical\u00a0Industries<\/a>, Seek Thermal<\/a>, and Teledyne Scientific\u00a0& Imaging<\/a> developing technology for consumer and\u00a0industrial applications\u2014from smartphones and cars to\u00a0night-vision cameras and sensors\u2014this sector of tech\u00a0is definitely a hot one.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Santa Barbara office is really the nerve center\u00a0of a lot of our cores and components,\u201d said Vatche Arabian<\/a>,\u00a0director of content marketing for FLIR, whose\u00a0name is an acronym for \u201cforward-looking infrared.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the Central Coast as the home to approximately\u00a0450 of its 3,000 employees worldwide, FLIR is considered\u00a0the global leader in the design, manufacture, and\u00a0marketing of thermal imaging infrared cameras.<\/p>\n

Seek Thermal was founded in 2012 by industry pioneering\u00a0scientists Bill Parrish and Tim Fitzgibbons,\u00a0who spent 40 years advancing the state of military and\u00a0professional-grade thermal-imaging technology. Seek\u00a0is their third venture, following the successful acquisitions\u00a0of their last two companies, Amber Engineering\u00a0and Indigo Systems, which is now part of Raytheon and\u00a0FLIR, respectively.<\/p>\n

Their mission is to make thermal imaging a part of\u00a0everyday life. \u201cWe make devices, for example, that turn\u00a0your phone into a thermal imager,\u201d explained Seek\u2019s\u00a0CEO and president Mike Muench. \u201cWe make handheld\u00a0thermal imagers. We make products specifically\u00a0for the fire and safety space, which are also stand-alone\u00a0thermal scanning products.\u201d<\/p>\n

With manufacturing on-site in Goleta, the team of\u00a0100 employees at Seek Thermal was able to respond\u00a0quickly to the COVID pandemic and the demand for\u00a0screening measures. Said Muench, \u201cWe now make\u00a0a scanning system for helping businesses to screen\u00a0employees for elevated body temperature.\u201d<\/p>\n
