Test your\u00a0knowledge with this short True-or-False quiz.<\/p>\n<p>1) The County of Santa Barbara regulates funeral\u00a0homes and cemeteries.<\/p>\n<p>False. They are regulated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfb.ca.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Cemetery\u00a0and Funeral Bureau of the California Department\u00a0of Consumer Affairs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>2) Embalming (preservation of a corpse from\u00a0decay) is required by law.<\/p>\n<p>False. Embalming is not required by law. The\u00a0embalming trend was kicked off by the first\u00a0celebrity embalming, Abraham Lincoln, said\u00a0Flynn, explaining, \u201cThey stopped at every\u00a0single town on their way to his final resting\u00a0place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>3) A deceased loved one\u2019s body must be removed\u00a0from the home within 72 hours.<\/p>\n<p>False. There is not an amount of time by\u00a0which a loved-one\u2019s body must be removed\u00a0from the home.<\/p>\n<p>4) It is legal to hold a funeral in your home.<\/p>\n<p>True.<\/p>\n<p>5) Ashes may not be scattered at sea in California.<\/p>\n<p>False. Ashes may be scattered at sea, provided\u00a0they are at least 500 yards from shore.<\/p>\n<p>6) Ashes may not be scattered in a lake, pond, or river\u00a0in California.<\/p>\n<p>True.<\/p>\n<p>7) Ashes may be scattered on land in California.<\/p>\n<p>True, provided you have permission from the\u00a0landowner.<\/p>\n<p>8) Cremation accounts for just 25 percent of all dispositions\u00a0in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>False. Cremation now accounts for 52 percent of\u00a0all dispositions in the United States, 63 percent in\u00a0California, and 90 percent in the Santa Barbara\u00a0region.<\/p>\n<p>9) Full-body burial at sea is not legal.<\/p>\n<p>False. Full-body burial at sea is legal. The only\u00a0requirements for full-body burial at sea are that\u00a0the boat be a minimum of three miles offshore\u00a0(federal waters) and in 600 feet of water. Due to\u00a0the shallowness of the coastline in Santa Barbara,\u00a0boats must go out eight miles to reach a depth of\u00a0600 feet.<\/p>\n<p>10) A \u201cgreen burial\u201d means that no fossil fuels were\u00a0used in the preparation of the body.<\/p>\n<p>False. \u201cGreen burials,\u201d which are legal provided\u00a0the cemetery allows them, are when there is no\u00a0embalming, no casket, and the body is wrapped in\u00a0a cloth shroud and buried directly in the ground.\u00a0There are currently no cemeteries in Santa Barbara\u00a0that offer this option. A loved one\u2019s ashes can\u00a0also be planted in a \u201cBio Urn\u201d that will grow a tree\u00a0of your choosing.<\/p>\n<p>11) \u201cWater cremation\u201d is illegal in California.<\/p>\n<p>False. Effective July 1, 2020, California became the\u00a014th state to allow \u201cwater cremation,\u201d also known\u00a0as alkaline hydrolysis.
