Gardens are magical in\u00a0any season, but during this\u00a0seemingly endless season\u00a0of COVID-19\u2019s \u201csheltering in place\u201d\u00a0restrictions, there\u2019s never been a better\u00a0time to have a garden to escape\u00a0to in Santa Barbara.<\/p>\n

No matter how much space\u00a0you have to work with, authors Isa\u00a0Bird Hendry Eaton<\/a> (a landscape\u00a0designer) and Jennifer Blaise Kramer<\/a>\u00a0(a lifestyle writer) have collaborated\u00a0on a book that\u2019s here to help. Small\u00a0Garden Style: A Design Guide for\u00a0Outdoor Rooms and Containers<\/a> is an\u00a0excellent resource to help you create\u00a0a design framework to bring your\u00a0garden dreams to life.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all about being really encouraging,\u00a0really accessible no matter\u00a0what size space you have,\u201d said\u00a0Eaton. \u201cEven if you\u2019re doing just a\u00a0couple containers by your front door\u00a0or your porch, everyone deserves to\u00a0have a little garden in their home,\u00a0and why not make it something that\u00a0really feels like you and bring your\u00a0individual aesthetic?\u201d<\/p>\n

A key component of the book is\u00a0helping you figure out what your\u00a0individual aesthetic is. There\u2019s a\u00a0really fun quiz that kick-starts the\u00a0book with a series of questions that\u00a0help you define your style.\u00a0Are you a Clean Minimalist who\u00a0starts your morning routine with\u00a0black coffee and a cold shower? Or\u00a0is your style more Bold Eclectic, with a black leather Eames lounge chair as your favorite place to\u00a0relax at home? Perhaps Organic Modern is more your vibe if your ideal mode of transportation\u00a0is hiking shoes, as you head for the mountains. Or is it a Jeep Wagoneer with wood paneling\u00a0that reflects your New Traditional style?<\/p>\n

\u201cThen we walk you through these different gardens,\u201d said Eaton, acknowledging that many\u00a0have crossover styles. \u201cWe take you through the design framework behind how to put a container\u00a0together, how to design an outdoor room, so you can understand the design theory\u00a0behind doing a really dramatic container.\u201d<\/p>\n

By the time you\u2019re at the nursery picking plants, the vast choices are not so overwhelming.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like a little mini design school for the reader,\u201d said Eaton.<\/p>\n

The authors embarked on the project when they wouldn\u2019t find another garden-meets-design\u00a0book. \u201cWe wanted this to feel like a design book for your outdoors,\u201d said Kramer. Her own\u00a0garden was designed by Eaton, who focuses on layering. \u201cBut not just in a pot and not just in\u00a0a garden,\u201d said Kramer. \u201cIt\u2019s the whole look, it\u2019s the whole room, and it\u2019s thinking about your\u00a0outdoor space just like you would your indoor space.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their goal was to make the book be \u201cfun and beautiful and inspirational, but also very\u00a0practical and useful,\u201d said Eaton. \u201cA container is a miniature garden; it\u2019s the best place to start.\u00a0There\u2019s a little bit of trial and error. Read the book, then go to the nursery on Saturday morning\u00a0and try it out \u2014 you don\u2019t have to start designing the entire garden; you can start with a couple\u00a0of containers. Now\u2019s a great time to plant!\u201d<\/p>\n
