Santa Barbara’s Rugged Beauty: Photographer George Rose Turns His Lens to Wine Country, from the Spring\/Summer 2020 issue of Touring & Tasting.<\/p><\/div>\n

One of the things about Santa Barbara County\u2019s wine\u00a0country<\/a> that is so unique is the western feeling, says\u00a0George Rose<\/a>, whose new large format photography\u00a0coffee table book, \u201cWine Country Santa Barbara\u00a0County<\/a>,\u201d showcases this bewitching California coastal wine\u00a0landscape to perfection.<\/p>\n

A longtime wine and travel photojournalist,\u00a0Rose, whose most recent coffee table book was\u00a0\u201cVineyard Sonoma County<\/a>,\u201d has photographed the Santa\u00a0Barbara region for decades.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you get over into the Santa Ynez Valley<\/a> where the\u00a0grapes are grown in Santa Barbara County, the mood is very\u00a0western and in the summertime it\u2019s a little dusty and considerably\u00a0warmer than on the coast. I just love the attitude, from\u00a0Santa Maria barbecue to all of the crazy Danish memorabilia\u00a0and architecture in Solvang,\u201d Rose says. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot of fun and\u00a0I think it comes through in the book, which I divided up by\u00a0trails or regions of the county.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also unique to the region: just about every wine grape variety\u00a0known to the modern American consumer is grown in Santa\u00a0Barbara County. A veteran photographer whose work has\u00a0been featured in Time, Newsweek<\/em> and Rolling Stone<\/em>, as well\u00a0as throughout the wine and travel world, Rose captures Santa\u00a0Barbara\u2019s beauty with sections on the various AVAs and wine\u00a0trails, as well as chapters that spotlight people enjoying the\u00a0wines in urban tasting rooms in downtown Santa Barbara and\u00a0Solvang<\/a>, and the all-important harvest.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese people who toil out in the vineyards all year long really\u00a0are the key and the linchpin of this whole business,\u201d says\u00a0Rose, who explains that his approach was kind of \u201cNational\u00a0Geographic<\/em>-style photojournalism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, the sumptuous landscapes and the intimate lifestyle\u00a0shots are both truly a work of art \u2014 and an eight-year labor\u00a0of love to compile and shoot. The book is handcrafted, hand stitched\u00a0and each sheet was hand fed into a Heidelberg press,\u00a0says Rose.<\/p>\n
