A spirited toast to all things alcoholic! By Leslie Dinaberg

The beautiful grounds of Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History are a wonderful spot to appreciate being out in nature, and what better way to enjoy a summer weekend than sipping wine underneath the oaks along Mission Creek? Especially when the proceeds go to support the work of the museum.

“Santa Barbara Wine Festival is a wine-focused festival,” says Festival Chair, Meridith Moore. Indeed, more than 50 wineries will be pouring at the museum, including some of our favorites like Santa Barbara Winery, Arthur Earl, Grassini, Kita Wines (Chumash Tribe), Palmina, Alma Rosa, Koehler, Au Bon Climat, Babcock, Sunstone, Fess Parker, Andrew Murray, Margerum, Jamie Slone, Beckmen and Whitcraft, to name just a few.

There are plenty of tasty bites at Santa Barbara Wine Festival as well. “We have a large array of top-shelf food purveyors, many of whom are especially paired with wineries that complement one another,” says Moore. “It is exciting because many of the winemakers and chefs are present and available for the guests to meet and discuss the qualities of their varietals and menu items–just another example of why this has become one of the most beloved wine festivals on the Central Coast and the one to attend.”

Among the yummy items on the menu are: Braised Short Rib Meatballs (Michael’s Catering); Oyster Shooters (Brophy Bros.); Homemade Tamales (Santa Barbara Tamales To Go); Sage and Butternut Squash Raviolis (Ca Dario); Cheese Tastings from around the World (C’est Cheese); Hand-rolled Truffles (Jessica Foster Confections); and Mini Cupcakes (Coveted Cakery), to name a few.

Santa Barbara Wine Festival takes place at Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History (2559 Puesta de Sol, 805/682-4711, sbnature.org) on Saturday, June 27 from 2-5 p.m.

We’re big fans of Coveted Cakery‘s baked goods, so we were very excited to hear about owner Jessica Burton‘s recent collaboration with local artisans on a new specialty cupcake menu.

The initial launch of this collaboration includes pairings with Sweet Lady Cook, a purveyor of seasonal small batch jams made from locally sourced organic fruits; Rock Rose Provisions, which makes small batch handcrafted nut butters using responsibly sourced local ingredients; and Mizuba Tea Company, a Santa Barbara-based tea company sourcing the finest quality Japanese green tea.

The mouthwatering new Coveted Cakery Artisan Collaboration menu flavors are:

Sweet Lady Cook Blueberry Lavender Cupcake, a Vanilla Bean Cupcake with Blueberry Lavender Jam Buttercream Frosting and topped with Blueberry Lavender Jam

Rock Rose Provisions Maple Spice Almond Butter Cupcake, a Devil’s Food Chocolate Cupcake with Maple Spice Almond Butter Buttercream Frosting topped with Crushed Almonds

and

To start the project off, Burton turned to some local food artisans that she already knew, was friends with, and had worked with at events. “I pitched the idea to them and they were all on board! I decided to start with three flavors to launch the concept and am planning to add artisans/flavors as we make more connections with the community.”

In addition to offering these special new flavors through her website and at events, Burton is collaborating with Carr Winery (414 N. Salsipuedes St.) on August 23 for a special paired cupcake and wine flightCoveted Cakery’s top three flavors will be served: Refreshing Lemon, Chocolate Salted Caramel, and Vanilla Blackberry Syrah! Wine Flight and Cupcake Pairing is $15 and the Cupcake Flight Only is $5.

When sweet lady Jessica Burton of Coveted Cakery contacted us and asked if we wanted to sample her fall flavors, we knew we were in for a treat! Awesome autumn flavors include Pumpkin Spice, Salted Carmel and Pistachio Honey, as well as the always-delicious Double Chocolate, Snickerdoodle and (my personal favorite) Chocolate Chip cupcakes with a Chocolate Chip cookie on top!

Whether you want something sweet for a small family gathering, an enormous wedding, or anything in between, Burton will bake up cupcakes to order, made fresh and customized just for you. She also makes beautiful customized cookies, like the ones with the fall issue of Santa Barbara SEASONS. As if we weren’t already putty in the hands of this delicious baking company, aren’t these cookies adorable?

You too can taste these yummy cupcakes this weekend at Taste of the Central Coast on Sunday (Oct. 27), hosted by the Family Care Network at the beautiful Bacara Resort & Spa (8301 Hollister Ave.).
